Redefining the Individual Education Plan (IEP) at Oakwood Academy, Mississauga

Nestled in the heart of Mississauga, Oakwood Academy is redefining how families view specialized learning. Some students with complex developmental profiles experience a more traditional curriculum as a barrier rather than a bridge. This is why our approach to the Individual Education Plan (IEP) Mississauga goes beyond \"checkbox\" academics and becomes a living, breathing path towards holistic success.

As Canada’s only DIR® Floortime™ model school, we take this approach to provide a respectful and research-validated environment for academic achievement with roots in social-emotional development and self-regulation.

Empowerment through a Transitional IEP

At Oakwood Academy, we pride ourselves on Meeting the child where they are. IEPs are guided by a Transition Framework, which allows the levels of support to shift in-the-moment as your child gains confidence and independence.

We offer three levels of classroom support at our Mississauga campus.

1: 1 Intensive Support (Transition Program) : Specifically tailored for students that will benefit from additional direct support, this track allows students to gain critical communication and emotion regulation skills.

1:4 Small Group Learning: The 1:4 group student ratio with a lead teacher practitioner, allowing students to have peer interactions and classroom routines and still be individual academic personas.

1:7 Small group: The most collaborative setting with an approach in accordance to Ontario Provincial Standards while providing the adjustments essential for each individual success.

The DIR® Floortime™ approach is an example of supporting child development beyond academics.

What sets us apart is that we teach beyond content knowledge; we foster the Whole Child. The first pillar of growth is included in every Individual Education Plan (IEP), the DIR® model:

Developmental Milestones: We observe and support the functional emotional developmental capacities that allow children to think and relate.

Sensorial — Individual Differences: we adapt the physical and sensory environment to the individual processing needs of each child using a sensorial gym on our campus.

Relationships: We build a strong, trusting relationship between educator and student. We know this is the bedrock fuel for any learning.
